by blue lake, listening, dreaming

Grade 5 | Duration 9:15

I was asked to create a work for the 50th Anniversary of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp that would also honor and thank the late Dr. Harry Begian for his musical gifts to the world. The composition, by blue lake, listening, dreaming, was premiered on July 13, 2014 by the Blue Lake Festival Band, Dr. Myron Welch, conductor. I’m hopeful this work presents music that allows the performers and audience members opportunity to reflect on the monumental efforts put forth to found and sustain this institution, a true national treasure. The work is also intended to celebrate Dr. Harry Begian, capturing the essence of his music making and persona. The piece opens with calm, reflective music that is interrupted by a grand vision that seems labored. As the piece continues, one hears more festive and playful materials, followed by an additional time at the side of the lake, just listening, thinking, dreaming. The music energizes further, leading to a return of the vision music, which closes in a celebratory coda. This performance is by the St. Olaf Band, Timothy Mahr, conducting. Home Concert - Fall, 2014.
